Photofrin is first injected into the patient where it then identifies and attaches itself to cancer cells. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is then employed, using a laser beam to activate the drug, which in turn attacks the cancer cells in tumors and surrounding tissue by cutting off their supply of nutrients. Cancerous cells and tumors shrink and die off as a result.
Doctors and specialists involved in the trial are hopeful that Photofrin will prove effective in treating malignant mesothelioma, which is a rare lung cancer directly connected to asbestos exposure. In the Phase 3 study, participants will receive larger doses of the Photofrin than what was given in Phase Two. It will also be combined with other medications to see if its effectiveness in fighting the cancerous cells is enhanced.
