The Star-Studded Gala Raised $7 Million to Fight Cancer
For more than 30 years, Shein Law has successfully represented the victims of occupationally caused cancers and their families. This year, we once again served as Silver Sponsors of the Philly Fights Cancer, Round 3 fundraising event to benefit the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania.
This annual, star-studded event, which raises funds for clinical trials and translational research, is the Abramson Cancer Center’s main fundraising channel. This year, Philly Fights Cancer raised $7 million. It featured special guest Whoopi Goldberg – Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony winner – as its Mistress of Ceremonies; and musical performances by America’s Got Talent star and cancer survivor, Caly Bevier; the iconic nine-time Grammy-winning group Earth, Wind & Fire; and Grammy, Oscar, and Golden Globe winner John Legend, who was also a Silver Sponsor. More than 1,500 VIP guests were in attendance for the event. This year, the gala was held on Saturday, October 28 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard for the first time.
Each year, the goal of the event – which was founded in 2015 – is to raise awareness about the Abramson Cancer Center and the world-class research and clinical trials that are being conducted there, along with the individualized patient care toward clinical trials and research. The Center is renowned for its ability to advance innovative cancer research, and develop cutting-edge technology that will dramatically improve the outcomes for patients battling cancer – offering hope to families that need the revolutionary and personalized care they provide. The Honorees of the night were Dr. Lynn M. Schuchter and the Tara Miller Melanoma Foundation, who are credited with much of the Center’s success.
According to Nancy Abramson-Wolfson, Chair of Philly Fights Cancer, the money raised so far has helped to fund 20 new clinical trials for 806 patients, and has even had a hand in the FDA approval of a new treatment. Carl June, MD, who has been with Penn Medicine for more than 20 years, directed research that led to the historic FDA approval of CAR-T therapy, a medical breakthrough that has the potential to help patients throughout the world, which would not have been possible without clinical trials. Many of those involved in this historic effort have been personally affected by cancer. Melissa Dietz, Co-Chair of Philly Fights Cancer and Vice President of Neiman Marcus, became involved after she lost her husband to multiple melanoma.
